Abstract: Cosmetic and personal hygiene products are complex systems formulated from natural and/or synthetic ingredients, whose topical application aims not only to maintain the physiological conditions of the skin but also to aesthetically modulate its appearance. In this context, makeup is consolidated as a significant segment of the cosmetic industry, playing a central role in aesthetic enhancement and the construction of visual identity, while also raising relevant discussions about its composition, safety, and impacts associated with continuous use. In light of the growing appreciation for products considered more sustainable and biocompatible, this study proposes to critically analyze, through an integrative literature review, the existing distinctions between organic and synthetic-based makeup, considering aspects related to composition, functional performance, toxicological safety, and environmental implications. To this end, a systematic survey of scientific publications in databases such as the Digital Library of Theses, Dissertations and Monographs, SciELO, and Google Scholar, as well as specialized journals in the field, was carried out. The selection of material for this writing was guided by criteria of thematic relevance and methodological consistency. From the analysis of these documents, a heterogeneous panorama can be observed, in which points of convergence and divergence coexist between organic and synthetic formulations. It was also observed that the differences transcend chemical composition, also encompassing aspects related to cosmetic performance, formulation stability, consumer perception of safety, and potential environmental impacts throughout the product lifecycle. In summary, the results presented indicate that the evaluation of these categories is not univocal, being strongly influenced by technical-scientific perspectives, market interests, and sociocultural constructs, highlighting the need for more in-depth investigations capable of supporting the development of safer, more effective formulations aligned with the principles of sustainability.
