Abstract

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, has spread globally at an alarming speed, putting several groups at risk, including pregnant women. Objective: This study aimed to highlight the relevance of prenatal care in Primary Care and examine the impact of the demand for these health services during the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it sought to compare data relating to prenatal care in the period from 2018 to 2021, using variables that broaden and deepen the understanding of the observed scenario. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive and ecological study was conducted with Brazilian pregnant women, with independent variables that included year, region and color/race of the pregnant women, while dependent variables were the number of consultations, age, level of education and birth weight. The inclusion criteria covered macro-regions and the search for prenatal care in both periods, with exclusions due to duplicate records and inconsistencies. Statistical analysis of data collected from the DataSUS and SINASC platforms was performed using Jamovi software, including descriptive measures and chi-square tests. Results: There was a 14% reduction in live births in Brazil, from 2.9 million in 2018 to 2.4 million in 2021, attributing this drop to several factors, including economic and social changes related to the pandemic. Furthermore, the analysis reveals a predominance of black and brown pregnant women, with 8 to 11 years of education and aged between 20 and 39 years. Conclusion: The importance of prenatal care for pregnant women is highlighted, showing improvements in birth weight with adequate assistance. There was also a predominance of white pregnant women, between 20 and 39 years old, with 8 to 11 years of education. It should also be noted that the COVID-19 pandemic did not negatively affect the search for prenatal care, demonstrating a positive impact on Brazilian health, despite the restrictions. This highlights the resilience and dedication of pregnant women in ensuring adequate monitoring.
