Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: This work elucidates the experience of students in an extension activity developed by Physiotherapy students from the Fanor Wyden University Center (UNIFANOR), in partnership with the Association for Disability Overcoming Limits (ADESUL), focusing on the kinetic-functional evaluation and physiotherapeutic intervention in wheelchair athletes from the wheelchair basketball team. Objective: To discuss physiotherapeutic intervention and its relevance to the health of athletes with disabilities, highlighting injury prevention and the impact of physiotherapy on sports performance and social inclusion, bringing approaches to a specific population. Methodology: This is an experience report of an extension activity carried out at the Clube Náutico Atlético with wheelchair basketball athletes. The evaluation process included detailed anamnesis, goniometry, perimetry, systematized postural analysis, and application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Six athletes with distinct clinical conditions were examined, including myelomeningocele, caudal agenesis, transtibial amputation, thoracic spinal cord injuries, and sequelae of Achilles tendon rupture. The assessments revealed recurrent postural alterations, presence of scoliosis, restrictions in trunk mobility, instability, and other functional limitations, highlighting the importance of physiotherapy in identifying dysfunctions and planning specific interventions for each case. Results and Discussion: Among the athletes evaluated, some cases stand out, such as: The athlete with myelomeningocele presented significant structural alterations in the lower limbs, mild scoliosis, and postural asymmetries. Despite this, maintained good trunk control and functional strength in the upper limbs. The athlete with caudal agenesis presented a congenital malformation of the sacrococcygeal region, compromising lumbar stability and trunk balance. Even so, she demonstrated good functionality with the use of adaptations and satisfactory performance with a wheelchair. These observations are pertinent. The professional works not only in the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, but also in optimizing the functional performance of athletes, where their presence from the beginning of the injury can provide better support to the athlete. Furthermore, the physiotherapist plays an essential role in promoting autonomy and ensuring the athlete's quality of life. Conclusion: Finally, this practice provided visibility to the physiotherapist's role within adapted sports, particularly with people with disabilities, reinforcing the need for a physiotherapist in this field capable of promoting personalized approaches that favor functionality, social inclusion, and the quality of life of the individuals served.
