Abstract

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Gerontological physiotherapy is an area of physiotherapy focused on the health of the elderly. Care in this area is humanized, focusing on prevention and rehabilitation, aiming for the functional independence of the elderly. With the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) predicting that, by 2060, 25% of Brazilians will be over 65 years old, this area becomes increasingly necessary, highlighting the importance of the population having knowledge of and access to this area of physiotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To propose an educational strategy on the role of gerontological physiotherapy. METHODOLOGY: This is a documentary study conducted in September 2025 by students of the Physiotherapy course at a higher education institution. A digital brochure on Gerontological Physiotherapy, created on the Canvas® platform, was used to present the results. Initially, a literature review was conducted, selecting material based on publications from 2020 onwards. Following this, the brochure was created collaboratively by the team. The research was conducted in accordance with bioethical principles and fully respected Resolution No. 466/12 of the National Health Council, which establishes guidelines and regulations for research involving human beings. RESULTS: The material supports the well-being of the elderly population, highlighting fall prevention and the promotion of quality of life, while also presenting gerontological physiotherapy and the role of the physiotherapist in the rehabilitation of the elderly person's autonomy. The brochure includes guidance on healthy habits and home safety measures, such as removing obstacles and installing grab bars. The simple language and color contrast make the material accessible and easy to apply. DISCUSSION: According to Sofiatti et al. (2021), gerontological physiotherapy is fundamental to promoting active aging, preventing falls, strengthening muscles, and improving balance. The physiotherapist acts in a preventive and rehabilitative way, considering intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the functionality of the elderly. These findings highlight the importance of programs that combine prevention and rehabilitation, ensuring functionality, safety, and quality of life for the elderly. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Given the increase in the elderly population in Brazil, new challenges must be considered, involving the importance of preventive and educational work in health, the control of chronic pathologies, especially those affecting physical health, and the encouragement of social reintegration, aiming to prevent psychological disorders. In this context, continuous care and regular physical exercise play a fundamental role in preserving functionality and promoting the well-being of this population.
