Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper presents an experience report of an extension activity carried out at the Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology (LFB) of the Drug Research and Development Center (NPDM) at the Federal University of Ceará, involving children aged 9 and 10 from a private school in Fortaleza, Brazil. The activity aimed to promote scientific literacy through immersion in a research environment, integrating science, health, and education using playful and experimental methodologies. The actions were based on the research lines developed at the LFB, particularly those focused on the study of natural compounds and functional foods related to the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus, using examples such as cashew nuts and pitaya. The activities included simulation of laboratory routines with personal protective equipment and glassware, application of natural pitaya dye in yogurt, food and nutrition education activities, and microscopic observation of pancreatic tissue. High levels of engagement, active participation, and the ability to relate scientific content to everyday experiences were observed. The experience highlights the potential of university extension as a strategy for disseminating scientific knowledge produced in laboratories and for fostering critical thinking and health awareness from early childhood.
